WOOD SHOP

This sound is wood being cut and having it fall while a clamp that is squeaky turns in the wood shop where the teacher is Peggy. Part of the volume is loud and some is soft. It’s like a wave. Up and down up and down. The mood is restless the cutting is the most calming part and the boom reminds you that NYC is the city that never rest. The sound captures no musical aspect of the school because it’s an adult not kids cutting the wood. The sound would be important to this future location because it would sound different when the future uses a different type of saw.

                                                                    MS Art Room

For our ethnomusicology project, we recorded sounds from the MS Art Room. We heard kids chatting, drawing, rustling paper, and stools moving. People’s voices, and people drawing made the sounds. The volume range they spoke at was medium at first, and then they got louder. Soon after, they became more silent. When we listened to this, we felt that the mood in the room was hyper. This sound captures kids being irrational and being chatty and very social. In the future kids might want to know what their elders acted like and what they talked about and were interested in. Over time these sounds might change because the kids might be in a different mood and talk more about art or talk in art class.

4’s Classroom

We recorded the fours classroom. The sounds in the fours room were a pencil sharpener and kids talking. Someone sharpening their pencil in an electric sharpener and lots of kids talking made the sounds. The volume of the sound in the fours room was a medium volume. The sounds convey a happy mood because the room was busy. This sound might be important to the future of this location because it shows what the fours did in 2009. This sound might change over time because the kids’ voices could have been softer or louder and the pencil sharpener might have been off.

MS Library

The sound is someone talking. The sound is made from people reading out loud.

The volume is kind of soft because it is a library and libraries are quite. It is happy. It shows the fun part because she is laughing and having fun.It will show that the library is a fun place for people. The sound will change if the thing they are learning changes.

Big Room

Our sound sample features movement class in the big room with the fours class.  The fours are happily dancing the skipping dance with Deborah, the movement teacher. In this case, the song they are skipping to is called “Mardi Gras Mambo.”

The children are having a great time skipping and dancing in a friendly environment. The sound is made by children’s feet, Deborah talking, and music playing off a stereo. This conveys the happy, energetic mood of early childhood education at our school.

This sound is important to preserve because it helps to remind us how fun learning can be.  The sound may change overtime because we might (Deborah is great so what I’m about to say should never happen…) have a different movement teacher , and different dances .

Kitty’s Office

In kitty’s office, there was lovely music playing and also people talking in the first grade classroom next to kitty’s.  There were also people talking about their injuries.  We believe these sounds convey sadness, anxiety and problematic situations.  The volume is giggling level, meaning tiny, and low. This sound shows the environment around kitty’s office.  This may be important in the future because it documents the people that were there.

Colleen’s 2nd Grade

The sound made by this class is a loud chatter of Colleen’s second graders. These second graders convey a mood of happy noises and clusters with the undertone of building the blocks of society. The voices and other combinations of our future in the world made these interesting compilations. Future generations could use this recording to their advantage by listening to the social groups and how friends build with blocks at work time. This is important because it shows the first steps in understanding the balance of our lives and generations.

Lynne’s 6th Grade Class

There are people talking in our sound. This sound is made by people’s vocal chords vibrating. The volume is seven out of ten. The mood is peaceful. This captures the sounds of the kids in Lynne’s 6th grade classroom. This recorded sound is not a very important sound.
